Photo Diary: March on Washington Panel at Serengeti Gallery & Cultural Institute

Image
This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a March on Washington Photographic Exhibit and Panel Discussion at Serengeti Gallery & Cultural Institute. Besides being awestruck by the beautiful collection of paintings, mixed media, sculptures, books, and jewelry in this small family-owned gallery. It was just breathtaking.

My Thigh High Obsession

Image
Fall is almost here and all I've been dreaming of these past few days are thigh high boots. And, while I shouldn't be thinking of gladiator sandals in the least, these beauties (a steal version of the sold out  $1,075 Altuzarra Summer 2013 Sandals) make my heart flutter. Those sandals sold out in less than 24 hours at all online boutiques and now most retailers have them on pre-order to be shipped in September (with many sizes already sold out for pre-order!). The gladiator thigh highs are on the back burner and the new goal is to get those Ziginy Piarrys into my closet. Because that shoe, ladies and gentlemen, can definitely be worn year round. And you all will become sick of seeing me in them. And I'm fine with that.

The Power of Friendship

Image
"You're used to your friends being pressed for you. Being all in your face. It just looks so obsessive", she said as she shook her head, the look of agitation slowly blossoming on her face. "You need to know that I'm not like them. I'm not going to be all over you. I'm not gonna be all in your face. I don't view friendship like that. That's just not how I do things..."
I started to grow defensive as I listened to her monologue. "'...all over me'? What? Why is she trying to make it seem like I only want to be friends with people who gravel at my feet..?"
"If we enjoy each other's company and always have a good time together, why not kick it on the regular? Why can't we just always have fun and be fun together?"
"People think differently. I just do things differently."
She was big on compartmentalization when it came to friendships. These people for this thing; those friendships for that. No need to…

The Daytime Clutch

Image
I love wearing a clutch in the daytime. Without handles or pockets to complicate a look, the streamlined look of a clutch makes a great accompaniment to a everything from a leather skirt and stilettos to a day dress and some chucks. They're a chic yet convenient size to carry all your necessities. While most people opt to hold their clutch in hand by the top or stuff it underneath their arms, I've always preferred to hold it by the bottom...cause, you know, it just feels easier.

There isn't a big difference between nighttime and daytime clutches, except what you wear with. Take a fancy beaded clutch to an afternoon tea party but wear it with a casual outfit to balance the look. Or, grab an over-sized clutch in a fun color, print, or sparkles. Or, you can choose to stick to more casual or natural fabrics like wicker, rattan, leather or faux crocodile. As long as you can fit all your necessities into a clutch, it's fit to be your best daytime companion!

Just me. In my cubicle. Having a mini photo shoot. Hoping that no one comes around that corner anytime soon. One day I will find the perfect angle to get my whole body and everything will be alright.

Phillip Lim for Target

Image
Target's lasted designer collection is a collaboration with the innovative and inspiring Chinese-American designer Phillip Lim. The collection, split into three sections - morning, noon, and night, offers a myriad of pieces for both men and women that can be worn time and time again. From underwear, pajamas, and sweats to trenches, slacks, handbags, sneakers, and cocktail dresses, it's pretty clear that Phillip Lim meant for these items to be long-lasting wardrobe staples.
